1. Get your Address Book in order. Specifically, make sure that your own card is correct and that you've added birthdays, preferably with the correct year, to cards for your friends and family. To add a birthday, select the card you want to edit in Address Book then, from the Card menu, select Add Field -> Birthday.

DeskBots 2008 includes an event monitoring feature that will automatically load birthdays from Apple's Address Book. It will also load holidays and other custom dates, such as anniversaries, from an easy to manage configuration file.

2. Make sure that your Mac isn't hardwired into any sensitive systems. This is a DeskBot after all. Life support and medical equipment, the national power grid, the computers that actually run the government, exotic scientific gear, and anything with the word "nuclear" in its name are right out.

3. Pick a spot on your dock. Will you put DeskBots next to Safari, or over by World of Warcraft? Maybe between Mail and that weird icon you never click on? How about if you snuggle it up between iTunes and TurboTax Pimp Edition? It's a tough decision, to be sure. Fortunately you have some time.

4. Start saving semi-witty quotes, off-color comments and moronic internet slang that you'll want your DeskBot to randomly spit back at you in a text file. As with the previous generation, you'll be able to add your own custom phrases to DeskBots 2008. Woohoo.

5. Make sure that you have at least twenty bucks available on your credit card or in your PayPal account. If you've read this far, then there's no question about whether or not you're going to register, so be prepared. Srsly.
